A Stranger in Zion
In January 2019 I went to Israel on a free ten-day trip with an organization called Birthright which has sent over 600,000 young diaspora Jews to Israel. I wanted to see how Birthright would portray Israel, especially in regards to the occupation of the West Bank, the siege of Gaza, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict more generally. After this free trip, I extended my time in Israel to see for myself what was happening in this place.
Along my journey I questioned:
What does the Jewish identity mean in the 21st century?
What is the role of American Jews in the occupation of Palestine?
What can Israel tell us about the direction America is headed?
